The Immune System
(Latin, immunis-free, exempt)
The Immune System includes the
Lymphatic System
(Latin, lympha-water)
Lymph - the fluid in the body consisting mostly of immune defense white blood cells called lymphocytes.
Lymphatic circulation- the capillaries and vessels that are part of the immune system. These collect lymph from the tissues and carry it to the bloodstream.
Lymphatic pump-a combination of factors necessary for proper lymphatic circulation.
They include:
1. External compression of body tissues
2. Normal pulsations from artery blood vessels
3. Contraction of muscles
4. Exercise contributing to contraction of muscles
Many studies have demonstrated that the lymphatic pump functions maximum during physical activity.
Conversely, when a person is at rest or asleep, the lymphatic pump is working the least amount with a resultant decrease in lymph flow.
In turn, when on sleeps longer than necessary, tissue spaces will tend to become congested with protein and carbon dioxide---the reason for the puffy appearance upon arising and the sluggish feeling.
Regular exercise is not only of benefit in staying alert and healthy, it is most essential for maintaining normal immune system strength and tissue repair mechanisms· the basic requirement for overcoming a good number of diseases.
The body's lymphatic system comprises our Immune Defense System which takes care of foreign invaders. The lymphatics constantly bathe our tissues in lymphatic fluid which contains T and B cells, so there is a constant surveillance in our body for abnormal cells and invaders.
The Immune system is the system that helps protect the body from unwanted invading influences and unwanted microbial growths. It is our Defense system.
Structures:
Spleen, Thymus, Tonsils, Lymph Vessels and Fluid
Function:
Filtration of blood; production of white blood cells; protection against disease; return protein to cardiovascular system.
Immunity is a vast subject.
When it is healthy, the body can defend itself against most invading organisms that may cause infection or disease. If invading infectious organisms make it through our skin or are not killed by enzymes in our saliva or tears, this defense system goes into action. Pain, swelling, and fever may be the signs of the battle against unwanted microorganisms, and infection or the healing of a tissue as in inflammation after damage has been done.
How well the Lymphatics and the Immune System function depends upon several factors:
1. Constancy of good quality energy flow/life force to the cells of the Immune System
2. Constancy of nervous impulse flow (electrical) supplying the cells that make up the Immune System
3. Constancy of good quality nutrients (fuel) supplying the cells that make up the Immune System
4. Constancy of blood and lymphatic flow, cleaning waste and removing abnormal microorganisms from the Immune System cells, preventing infection developments.
5. High quality genetically inherited functional and structural pattern of the Immune System
Normally this process runs smoothly and comfortably.
When dysfunction occurs due to stress or interruption in any of the above-mentioned factors, you may receive mild to severe symptom signals.
