The Thyroid Gland and the Glandular System of Endocrine Glands
Structures:
The eight special glands known as
the Endocrine Glands are:
Pineal
Pituitary
Thyroid
Parathyroid
Thymus (also an important Immune System gland)
Adrenal
Pancreas
Gonads (Ovaries and Testes-
also important Reproductive System organs)
Function:
Regulation of body activities through transportation of hormones by the circulatory system.
"Endocrine" means to secrete within. Each of the endocrine glands produces and secretes its own special chemical substances, called hormones. They pour these into the bloodstream. Hormones control and balance the functions, effectiveness and harmony of hundreds of thousands of body biochemicals.
These eight very small organs are small wonders within the world of your body. It is not possible to completely restore health without normalizing the endocrine glands.
Constantly living in conditions of stress, excesses, trauma, hazards, pollution, drugs and chemicals eventually weakens and undermines the efficient functioning of these glands.
Almost everyone today needs endocrine gland evaluation and restoration through proper nourishing substances.
This basically means, any body coming from a background of several generations of living in the extremes and unnaturalness of our civilization.
Specifically, the Importance of Thyroid Gland Health (Greek; tyreos=shield + eidos =form) This gland resembles a shield. It is situated in the lower part of the front of the neck and consists of two lobes, one on either side of the trachea. It secretes, stores and liberates as necessary, the thyroid hormones. These hormones require iodine for their make-up.
The thyroid regulates the body's metabolism, gives the body energy, keeps the body awake and alert, promotes a feeling of well-being and v igor, and regulates the functional activity of each organ in the body.
The thyroid gland maintains a vital control over the nutritional needs of the entire body. This gland works in cooperation with the other endocrine glands, and during times of stress, it is designed and "rigged up" to take on the burdens of the other glands. However, this gland can stand this extra strain only when it is healthy.
Dr. Ferguson, a British medical doctor, tested the thyroid glands of mentally troubled children and found them to be dangerously deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, especially B, C and iodine.
When he improved the children by giving them food in its natural, uncooked state, including plenty of kelp, the vitamin and mineral deficiency was corrected, and after a few months the children's behavior was healthy.
The thyroid influences the growth of bones and teeth and ensures the muscle tone of the face. Those who have wrinkles at an early age or who are greatly overweight should be aware that their thyroid gland may not be in good condition.
Perhaps it is lacking REAL nourishment!
Gland Repair and Maintenance When the body is under stress-spiritual, biochemical or structural, or even when functioning normally, its cells, glands and organs, must constantly be nutritionally replenished.
The glands and organs perform special functions---functions requiring special nutrients to use not only for normal tissue maintenance, but also as tools in the execution of its specific cellular, organ and glandular purpose or mission.
These specific nutrients include vitamins, minerals, enzymes, hormones, and other intracellular elemental components. They are either provided by the sun, air, water, and foods we eat, or may be supplemented.
Normally, the thyroid functions smoothly and comfortably. Factors, Signs and Symptoms related to Thyroid Dysfunction:
The hypothyroid case may be difficult to recognize clinically, however, with other significant findings, an inability to withstand mental pressure, may be the only differentiating factor.
The Nutritional Effects of the thyroid gland may be listed as follows:
a. Calcium-Phosphorus ratio regulator
b. Oxygenation factor
c. Factor in elimination of toxins
d. Regulation factor in cellular metabolism
e. Factor in cholesterol metabolism
A suitable hypothesis for rationalization of thyroid therapy is presented below:
1. In relation to the activity of the thyroid with calcium-phosphorus and cholesterol metabolism it's the most obvious effect to be observed.
a. In general we may say that the activity of the thyroid follows the blood levels of these as follows: 1. Increased thyroid activity; Balance in favor of phosphorus (increased need for calcium) Cholesterol decreased
2. Decreased thyroid activity. Balance in favor of calcium (increased need for phosphorus) Cholesterol increased
b. According to clinical experience the following biochemical factors act to influence thyroid Function as follows:
1. Iodine: Acts as a depressant for thyroid activity as evidenced by use of Lugols (potassium iodide) solution in hyperthyroidism.
2. Unsaturated Fatty Acids: Acts to increase thyroid activity as evidenced by ability to low blood cholesterol levels (probably through thyroid stimulation)
c. By this rationalization, iodine and calcium would be recommended in hyperthyroidism. And, unsaturated fatty acids without iodine added and lecithin as a source of phosphorus Would be indicated in hypothyroidism.
d. Plus, General nutritional support for thyroid tissue rebuilding is indicated in both hypo and hyper-thyroidism, on a clinical basis depending upon symptomatic and observable response of patient.
2. While the above hypothesis is far from complete, it does form a basic range of activity which clinical experience has shown to be sound. In all cases where the thyroid is being considered, the important axis of the thyroid-adrenal-pituitary should be kept in mind (hence the product Bioaxis is often indicated).
*Considerable evidence exists to show that clinical disturbances manifest as thyroid problems are often superimposed burdens brought about by adrenal or pituitary dysfunction.
The following data pertains to classical symptoms of hypo and hyperthyroidism
Prominent Clinical Signs and Symptoms:
A. HYPERTHYROIDISM
1. Tachycardia Found in 100% of cases, pathognomonic sign Tachycardia is the most outstanding finding. The characteristic intensity shown by personality presentation is usually easily recognized: exopthalmia may or may not be present.
2. Tremors
Particularly tremors of protuding tongue
3. Sweating Tendency to moist skin, particularly palms of hands and soles of feet.
3. Weight Loss The point being made here is that through the above mechanisms, the pathological manifestations of hyperthyroidism are expressed. . i.e. as fibrosis or fatty deposits, oxygenation General distribution, increased appetite and Linear build increase
4. Vertigo
Balance mechanism, ability to balance on one Leg standing on chair.
5. Personality Stability
Frightened appearance, intensity outstanding,
Possible Etiological Background:
As would be expected in an elevated metabolic state, phosphorus (the acid mineral) is predominate over calcium (alkaline).
As a general rule, cholesterol
may be expected to be decreased or normal, fat, however, high in localized deposits, behind eyeballs, for example.
Calcium loss is characteristic (Sulkowitch Reagant test)
Iodine (or thyroxin according to the Protein Bound Iodine Test i.e. blood iodine or circulating thyroid hormone is usually high
(increased BMR-basal metabolic rate) hyperirritability (calcium loss), etc
B. HYPOTHYROIDISM
1. Weight Gain
(Particularly upper body, breasts and arms
2 Mental Dullness
i.e. elevated calcium in relation to phosphorus, decreased blood iodine, etc. The mental picture of the hypothyroid (Inability to work under mental stress and strain)
3. Hair and Skin Symptoms (Coarse hair, thick skin, thick lips and tongue) Lowered Temperature (Cold hands and feet, need for more warmth than average person, etc)
4. Parasthesias
(Numbness, tingling sensations)
6. Fingernails
(Ridged, thick, brittle)
Possible Etiological Background
Pathognomonic of hypothyroidism is an elevated cholesterol; the remainder of the findings listed above are in the main, the opposite of hyperthyroidism case is often the most important factor in differential diagnosis, here the outstanding quality being the inability to tolerate pressure situations and to make immediate decisions. As hypothyroidism, as usually presented clinically, is indistinct , the mental consideration may be of considerable importance from a symptomatic viewpoint
